Glencoe saved from closure

A local businessman, Andy Meldrum, has come to the rescue after the current owner, David Campbell, said he was closing it after 5 years.

A press release says "Andy is absolutely delighted to announce that the ski centre will definitely be opening its doors this season and would like to thank David Campbell for his patience during the necessary lengthy negotiations that led to today's announcement."

Meldrum has given assurances about the future of the ski area and has plans to develop summer activities too.

We reported the story earlier on PlanetSKI as its future hung in the balance.

This winter there will be 6 full time workers and around 30 part time staff.

He is a ski teacher and ran his own outdoor centre at the Spittal of Glenshee.

"This is really great news for Glencoe snow sports enthusiasts, for Scottish skiing and for local employment. We've got a lot of work to do to be open for the start of the season, but we're all up for the challenge" says the resort manager, Bobby Munroe.

However the resort has an uphill task ahead of it.

The ski centre has endured tough times recently. Poor snowfall six years ago led to its worst season on record and overall Scottish skiing has been in sharp decline in recent years.

Last winter though was a good one for the area.

To promote the re-opening of the Glencoe Ski centre season passes are being offered at the specially discounted price of £250 (normally £300) until the end of this month.
