Wednesday January 31, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

Historical items charting more than 100 years of British snowsports are to be taken on by a leading sport heritage centre. But how can we see them? UPDATED

The Ski Club of Great Britain is to hand over its huge collection of books, documents and ski artefacts to De Montfort University in Leicester.

The Club is the oldest snowsports club in the UK.

It was founded in 1903.

It has had to find a new home for the collection following its recent move from its traditional Club House in Wimbledon, where members visited, to rented office space.

After six months of working through the Ski Club's library, the University has agreed to hold the items in its so-called Special Collections.

The collection will be catalogued, curated and made available for public viewing and academic research.

But only on request.

Many club members were concerned what would happen to the history of the Club as its HQ and Club House in Wimbledon were sold as it moved to the rented office space by Wimbledon station.

Some feel the history is now being put into storage for occasional academics, rather than made more widely available.

However when they were stored at the old club house they were only available on request too.

Last year only one person come to see them and there were some occasional calls.

At De Montfort University there will be dedicated archive staff and a catalogue system that should help people find what they are looking for more easily.

The University also hase access to the best digitizing technology so have the capability to make the hundreds of books accessible to anyone in the world, not just anyone who can travel to London.

The official launch of the new home for the historical treasures will take place at the University on 15th March when more details of the new partnership will be revealed.

De Montfort University claims to be renowned as a leading international centre of sporting history and already houses collections from Kodak, Special Olympics, England Boxing and more.
