YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE - Clare Meaney, PlanetSKI
Tuesday February 20, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

PlanetSKI's Clare Meaney finally gets back on her skis on after the worst three years of her life. We salute you Clare!

When my friends asked me to go skiing again this year I felt very anxious after all I had been through.

I mean who could be unlucky enough to have serious ski injuries and then in the same year have a sub arachnoid haemorrhage?

See here for my initial hit and run ski accident, but be warned - it is not for the squeamish:

And here for this updated blog that we posted earlier this month.
I decided that it would only be fair on my family to tag along.

After all, they'd had some tough times over the last couple of years, to say the least.

Even though I was never going to ski again I could look at the beautiful Swiss mountains and feel glad to be alive.

When we arrived there, it felt wonderful  - like I'd never left.

I'd agreed to try "ski de fond" with my friend.

But apart from that I'd be relaxing at the chalet and dipping my feet in the in the hot tub.

What could possibly go wrong?

As far as I was concerned, "ski de fond" was very gentle.

All you had to do was point your skis on flat surface and go straight.

The man in the shop looked at us strangely when we asked for the skis.

He said he had never tried "ski de fond" and he wished us good luck.

When we got on the first bit of the course we got the hang of it easily.

You just put one foot in front of the other.

It was nice and easy and beautifully groomed, like fresh corduroy.

It couldn't have been further from the truth.

We hadn't been going for very long and it suddenly turned from completely flat to very steep in a millisecond - Yikes!

We picked up so much speed and were completely out of control with no way of stopping.

I fell over and thought I was very lucky on first day back skiing after 3 years that I didn't hurt myself and that we'd take the skis back never to try it again.

I thought I'd go back to the chalet and have a lovely piece of lemon drizzle and be thankful that I was OK.

No harm done.

When we returned to the hire shop my friend suggested that I might as well try "normal" skiing again on the basis the "ski de fond" perhaps wasn't for us.

"NO WAY IN A MILLION YEARS!" was my reply...

But I did:

Now this is not the time to go over old ground and give you again the details of the hit and run accident  and my dice with death.

And anyway you can read all the gory details in the two links at the start if this article.

I never thought I would ever ski again after what I have been through since January 20th 2015.

I don't know what possessed me to try again.

But I did.

And I'm planning another ski trip already.

A girls trip to St Anton seems like a good idea...

Well you only live twice...
