Jan Farrell takes bronze at a World Cup event. It's the first British podium in Speed Skiing since 2004.

He came third at the World Cup speed skiing event in Sun Peaks, Canada.

He reached a speed of 167.45 kph (104mph) with the Italian, Simone Origone, taking top spot.

"This first Speed 1 podium is a victory for me, a dream come true. It's a culmination of years of work, with a couple of bad seasons after my 217kph (135mph) crash in 2016," said Jan Farrell.

"I think the piste in Sun Peaks benefits me due to its undulations, I can work them to my advantage on my way down. I improved my spoilers for this race thanks to advice the days before from current World Champion, Bastien Montes from France.

"I've cut the top part to achieve a lower position and I believe this has been a decisive part of my success.

"Mentally I've felt the need for speed more than ever, even more than before my crash. I could feel with every run that I was searching for the best line, adapting my body into the tightest tuck position possible".

There are three more races to go before the end of the season:

  • Idre Fjäll (Sweden)
  • Erzurum (Turkey)
  • Grandvalira (Andorra)

Jan will be looking to improve his results and become the first British speed skier to win an event since Nigel Brockton won in Altaussee, Austria in 2003.

Jan Farrell was born in 1983, the son of a Czech mother and an English father.

He first put on a pair of skis when he was 2 years old, and he has never missed a season since the age of five.

His first speed ski race was in 2011, and soon began to have success: he's been the top British ski racer 3 years in a row.

He was 9th in the world in 2012, and 5th in 2013, before winning the top spot in 2014, becoming Overall FIS Speed Ski World Cup SDH Champion.

He reached a speed of 210.035 kph 130mph), thus becoming the third fastest skier in history on downhill skis.
