SKI HISTORY HANDED OVER
Saturday March 17, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

A big collection of artefacts charting 100 years of skiing history has been presented at its new home.

The Ski Club of Great Britain's archive of books, trophies, artworks and other items, had been housed at the club's HQ for more than a century, but is now being stored by De Montfort University in Leicester.

The collection has been officially presented at a ceremony at the university.

We reported on the announcement of the move in January:

The re-homing of the archive had been a concern following the decision to move the Club to new, rented premises.

However, De Montfort University offered a new home for the collection in their International Centre for Sports History and Culture.

It will join other collections such as the Special Olympics and England Boxing and is in the process of being catalogued, restored and archived.

The items will not be on permanent display but will be made available for academic research as well as public viewing.

The Ski Club collection charts a rich history of Britain's love affair with winter sports.

"There really is no better place for the Ski Club archive than the world-renowned centre for archiving and sports history here at De Montfort University, Ski Club treasurer Ian Holt said.

"Over the past few months we've been extremely impressed with the care and attention to detail from the team here, and the passion they have for preserving and sharing this fantastic resource for future generations.'

Professor Martin Polley, Director of the International Centre for Sports History and Culture at De Montfort University added: 'Sports history is one of De Montfort's unique academic strengths, with the International Centre for Sports History and Culture providing a focus for research and teaching, and the Special Collections developing as a specialist archive for the subject.

"We are delighted that the Ski Club's collection has come here, and we look forward to working with researchers and students on this significant set of materials.'
