GB SNOWBOARDER SUFFOCATES TO DEATH IN SNOW
Friday April 6, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

The 25-year old man died in Meribel after falling head first into deep snow. It follows a similar accident in St Anton last month. UPDATED

The seasonaire fell while riding off piste in the French resort on Wednesday.

The accident happened at 13.45 and he had been working the season in Les3Vallees.

Two passing skiers saw a snowboard sticking out of the snow about 20 metres from the piste and raised the alarm.

A Mountain Rescue spokesman said the man could have been buried for up to half an hour.

"He was buried up to his pelvis and the snow was very heavy, very compacted," said the spokesman

His identity has not been released and next-of-kin have been informed.

"We are supporting the family of a British man following his death in France. Our staff are in contact with the police in the UK and France, and the tour operator, about this case," said a statement from the Foreign Office.

Police say he was in the Les Allues area of the resort when he fell head first in deep snow and suffocated.

Questions are being raised about the impact of the snowboard in the incident.

If the person had been a skier then perhaps the skis would have come off in the fall.

This would have meant he might have been more able to move and then free himself.

A mountain rescue helicopter was scrambled from the neighbouring resort of Courchevel but the emergency services were not able to revive him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The man died asphyxiated, unable to escape, after falling head first in the snow. Rescuers attempted resuscitation but to no avail," said local media.

An investigation has been launched.

It follows an accident last month where a 48-year old British snowboarder died in St Anton in Austria.

He too suffocated in deep snow.
The Alps have seen huge amounts of snow this winter and in some places more than 5m has fallen.

Meanwhile a 55-year old British man has died in the resort of Pal-Arinsal in Andorra.

He died outside a restaurant at 3.30pm.

The authorities say he appears to have died of natural causes.
