LAAX GOES GREENER
Wednesday May 2, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

Europe's leading freestyle resort is making new strides in its effort to become the first self-sufficient ski resort. It's given itself 12 years to do it.

We've visited Laax in Switzerland in spring for the past three years and have been impressed by its efforts to go green.

Laax has set itself the ambitious target of being the first ski resort to provide all its own energy 2030.

It wants to be a role model for other alpine destinations.

We first reported on the Laax Greenstyle project in 2016:

Some of the eco-friendly measures can be clearly seen as you travel around the mountain, including the solar panelled lift stations.

Things have been moving on and one of the new initiatives for the season just gone that caught our eye was the KITRO Foodwaste Management System.

A startup company produced the system for the resort's restaurants.

It analyses which foods and how much of them end up being thrown out.

The aim is to reduce waste, as this short promo video explains:

Some of the many other measures include a network of charging stations for electric cars and e-bikes, fresh water fountains to discourage the purchase of plastic water bottles, and an engine data system for all its snow groomers to show the best speed for minimal fuel consumption.

The rocksresort design hotel and apartments where we have stayed has a pellet heating system and oil heaters are gradually being removed from the rest of Laax.

Over the last seven years the Graübunden region, which includes Laax, has reduced energy consumption by 15 per cent, but there's a long way to go.

"LAAX is doing quite well on sustainable development, but we are far away from perfect," Reto Fry, the man responsible for the project told PlanetSKI.

"It is an never-ending story, which needs steady effort to improve. New exciting solutions are coming every year."

We look forward to checking out more of them out next season.
