MOUNTAINS IN THE SUMMER
Sunday May 6, 2018 - Email this article to a friend

Why don't more skiers head to the hills in the summer? It's a question we ask ourselves each year and now more than ever.

The mountains have it all in the summer months in our opinion and this year we are going to do more to try to encourage people to sample their delights, with full summer PlanetSKI coverage from the Alps and beyond.

There are the obvious activities of hiking, mountain biking, road biking and e-biking.

Then there's paraponting, rafting, climbing, via ferrata and ones that require a bit more adrenallin.

And don't forget there are some decent beaches too.

And this year, if you chose a spot near one of the glacier resorts you are likely to get some very good summer skiing in too.

See here for our in-depth review of the summer glacier skiing in the Alps and beyond:
After the huge amounts of snow that fell last winter the summer skiing and snowboarding is set to be as good as most can remember.

We have just finished our season in the French Alps.

"It is hard to exaggerate just how much snow remains at altitude in the Alps and this bodes very, very well for the summer," said the PlanetSKI editor, James Cove.

Here at PlanetSKi we will shortly have a full feature on where to ski this summer but while in Val d'Isere last week we learnt it was going to open some non-glacier slopes as early as the beginning of June.

However skiing is just an added bonus to the other summer activities.

Here at PlanetSKI we have posted a few in our special section, now live, on the Home Page.

Our chief reporter Jane Peel will be out in the Alps, our senior news reporter, Katie Bamber, is heading over to Rockies in the USA and Canada for much of the summer.

There are no prizes for guessing where our editor, James Cove, is heading to: the southern hemisphere for some skiing and it's Australia & New Zealand this time.

After he's spent some time in the Alps of course sampling all that they offer in the early summer.

"I have been banging on about summer in the mountains for years and I think people are slowly realising what they offer as numbers are up across many areas," said James.

"If you love the mountains in the winter you will love them in the summer too. They are no better or worse, just different."

Switzerland reports an increase in the 50+ age group taking walking holidays, biking (whether road, mountain or E-biking) is on the increase in France and Austria.

Our evidence is primarily anecdotal as we criss-cross the mountains, but we talk to many people and keep our eyes and ears open.

We are pleased to say that more Brits are going to the mountains whether with operators, agents or independently.

This summer at PlanetSKI we'll be out there too so do check back if you want to see what all the fuss is about.

Here are just a few things our team of reporters got up to last summer out in the mountains.
