Monday November 23, 2009 - Email this article to a friend
A 14 year old girl skies into a tree on an an intermediate run in Breckenridge. She was wearing a helmet at the time but it appears she died from chest injuries.
The girl, has been named as Haley Gans, from Colorado Springs.
She was skiing on the Spruce Trail which is a blue run. Eye witnesses say she was skiing fast when the accident happened. It's not clear what caused the accident or if anyone else was involved, but a full investigation is now under way.
She was taken by a medical team to a nearby medical centre where she was pronounced dead.
The resort has released a statement to the media about the accident and confirmed the incident.
"Breckenridge Ski Resort, Breckenridge Ski Patrol and the Vail Resorts family extend their deepest sympathy and support to the family and friends of the young woman."
It is thought to be the first death of the US ski season and casts a shadow over a weekend when many resorts are opening up for the winter.
This week Austria extended its compulsion on all children under 15 years old to wear a helmet. See here for further details.
