Mongolia's first ski area
Saturday November 28, 2009 - Email this article to a friend

It's not quite your typical ski resort but it has snow and some lifts too.

Sky Resort has nine ski runs served by 6 lifts and claims a total vertical descent of 190m.

The runs are 100% covered by snow making and, quite frankly, they need to be as the area only receives 20cm of natural snow each winter.

But it is cold, an average of -20c, and it is dry as well so it is ideal for snowmaking.  The idea is just to introduce people to skiing and snowboarding as part of a package for tourists visiting the area and curious locals.

The area is located very close to the capitol, Ulanbaatar, and will operate as a golf course in the summer.

The nearest existing resort is believed to be Alsham in the Chinese province of Inner Mongolia.

Alsham is regarded as in the top league of ski areas in China, with a FIS racing slope.
