Katy Perry opens Ischgl
Sunday November 29, 2009 - Email this article to a friend
She gave a free concert in town to more than 20,000 thousand people and continued the tradition of the Austrian resort opening with a massive concert.
Last year Leona Lewis opened proceedings and this year Katy Perry stepped up to the microphone.
She was dressed in a rather snazzy Santa outfit, though she did complain about the cold as the snow machines shot out simulated snow on the stage. "It's f***ing cold" she said a few times to the meriment of the crowd who were somewhat better prepared for the weather.
So much so she asked the audience for a hat and gloves to warm up and, of course, they swiftly arrived.
The 24-year old US singer didn't disappoint the crowds who gathered in the cold temperature early Saturday evening in the main village to hear her belt out some of her hits.
The crowd loved itPeople who have been to many of the concerts here at this time of year said it was one of the best in recent times with the crowd dancing and jumping around throughout the performance. She even dived into the crowd herself for a bit of dancing.
Her boyfriend, the UK comedian Russell Brand, was in the audience but he kept a low profile in the sound tent. Her parents and brothers were also there and they all plan to stay in Ischgl until Wednesday and go up the mountain. Katy is apparently a keen snowboarder.
So, what did she make of the ski resort?
According to her post on twitter this afternoon she misses a few things......"omg, there's no starbucks or gay club here in the mountains... breathe breathe"
She has topped the charts across the world with 'I Kissed a Girl' and 'Hot n Cold' both of which she performed on Saturday night. She rose to fame a couple of years ago with her internet hit, 'Ur So Gay'.
As well as Leona Lewis, Ischgl has seen opening concerts by Lionel Richie, Rihanna, The Corrs, The Pussycat Dolls and Ronan Keating.
The concert is free to anyone with a valid lift pass, though rather sneakily the resort quietly puts the day pass up from a normal €43.50 (£38) to €55 (£48) on the day of the concert.
Ischgl this weekThe skiing and snowboarding conditions in Ischgl have also been pretty good with a decent covering at the top of the resort though the mild temperatures recently have affected the lower slopes and the runs into town are closed.
It has not quite lived up to the early season promise of a few weeks ago and is certainly not as good as this time last year, when PlanetSKI was in the resort, but people out on the slopes today weren't grumbling. See here for the conditions last year and video of last year's concerts.
They were smilling, riding hard and enjoying the first turns of the winter in this part of The Alps. There were even decent pockets of powder to be found up high.
We'll bring you a fuller review of the concert with some photos and a look at the snow conditions in Ischgl later.
In the meantime Katy Perry (or, heaven forbid, one of her minions) has updated her twitter page on Saturday night after the concert......."Yodeling trio in the ALPZ! WHUT WHUT! Ischgl has been so fun so far. Tomorrow we hit the slopes!"
