The Canadian skier, John Kucera, is out of next February's Olympics after crashing in Lake Louise last weekeknd. He was a real medal contender.
He crashed in the Super G injuring the tibia and fibula in his left leg and he had surgery on Sunday night. The 25 year old skier, from Calgary, will be out for the rest of the season.
He is the reigning downhill world champion and carried many of Canada's Olympic medal hopes.
He is reported to be very disappointed but is determined to come back stronger and fitter from his injury.
It follows the injury of the US skier, TJ Lanning, who fractured vertebrae in his neck and dislocated his left left knee in a crash during the season-opening World Cup downhill on Saturday. He too is out for the rest of the season after crashing on one of the fastest sections of the course.
TJ Lanning's crash at Lake Louise on Saturday:
Lanning will probably not require surgery. See this related story for a review of the race and the results.
Lake Louise will host the first women's speed races of the season this weekend with two downhills and a super-G while the men head off to Beaver Creek in Colorado for a downhill, giant slalom and combined event this weekend.
