Verbier ride cancelled
Sunday December 13, 2009 - Email this article to a friend

The first major event of the winter in Verbier has been cancelled because of the recent rain. It's a shame, but just one of those things.

It was raining up to 2,500m so the kickers could not be built for the Slope Style event and the organisers have reluctantly decided to call it off.

There were rumours in town that it was cancelled because a lift had broken and a spare part could not be sourced, but these rumours turned out to be unfounded.

The event is the traditional season opener and attracts riders from around the Alps who compete in the various events and have a bit of a party in town too.

"Ride Freesport and Televerbier took the decision to postpone the event until next winter so as to maintain a level of safety for the athletes and also not to compromise the athlete's professional skiing standard," say the organisers in a statement.

"It's important that freestyle skiing is portrayed in a professional manner and running the event in conditions which prevent the athletes from performing at their optimum level does not do the sport justice."

However, here at PlanetSKI, we are in the resort and though disappointed that the event isn't going to happen we fully intend to enjoy what we can. It is though a very limited ski area open here in Verbier.

In the meantime here are a few photos of what it should be like.
