Giant iceberg heads to Australia
Saturday December 12, 2009 - Email this article to a friend
It broke away from Antarctica a while ago but is now causing a few problems. Especially to ships.
It actually broke off a decade ago but could cause huge problems for shipping as it breaks up near the Australian shiping lanes.
The iceberg is 19 kms long and 8 kms wide and is known as B17B by scientists.
"It's still 1,700 kms away from Australia, so it's quite a long way away, it's not really on our doorstep yet but it's been heading steadily towards us," said glaciologist Neal Young.
An iceberg that size in the area had probably not been seen since the 19th Century.
It's another story we will keep an eye on here at PlanetSKI.
