Art of Ice
Sunday January 18, 2009 - Email this article to a friend

This week Grindelwald becomes the epicentre for sculpturers hacking out creations from vast blocks of ice.

Now in its 27th year the World Snow Festival transforms the Grindelwald village square into a massive, highly competitive art studio.

Teams of artists from different countries design and etch figures and sculptures from metre-high blocks of snow over a 6 day period.

Ice at nightIce at nightThe six-day festival comes to a close when a jury of experts judge the giant masterpieces according to topicality, originality and skill, and the general public get to cast their vote too.

In 2005 team GB were voted winners by the judges, but the crowd voted for the French team.

But outright winners with both jury and public for 2008 were team GB with the huddle of elephants, and the runners up for the jury was the "highly original and imaginative" cross created by the Swiss.

Who will it be in 2009? We will be bringing you pictures of the creations here on PlanetSKI later in the week.
