Meribel cancels World Cup moguls - Ben Clatworthy, Racing and Sports Correspondent
Sunday December 13, 2009 - Email this article to a friend

F.I.S have cancelled the World Cup Freestyle Mogul competition that was due to take place in Meribel next week.

Despite recent snowfalls in the resort there just isn't enough of the white stuff to host such a prestigious event.

Mogul events require one of the largest amounts of snow in order to be able to go ahead.

The resort needed at least 80cm of compacted snow to build the freestyle course.

The competition was due to take place on the 'Du Corbey' stade, which is at the very bottom of the resort.

How it should have beenHow it should have beenIt's the same piste as is used for the British Alpine Ski Championships each year.

Fabrice Mielzwek, director of the Meribel tourist office, said it was a shame the event has been cancelled, as it was to be the only World Cup freestyle ski event for men and women to take place in France before the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Ever positive, he commented, "We will be ready next year!".

Fear not though, for recreational skiing, the snow in the 3 Valleys is in good shape. There is 78cm of snow on the upper slopes in Meribel and 1 metre in neighbouring Val Thorens.

In Val Thorens the 13th Ski and Boarder week has got underway.

Pro-riders from across the globe gather to take part in a wide range of competitions, including, Big Air, Snowboarder Cross and Skier Cross.

The first of these, the Slalom, was taking place despite moderate snowfalls in the afternoon.

It's not the only event in the Alps that has been cancelled due to the poor snow levels and warm temperatures, the Verbier Ride was called off as we reported here.
