Whistler fits kids with GPS
Monday January 4, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

The satellite navigation system is a safety device and of course shows kids, and their parents, where they have skied all day.

Whistler is the latest Intrawest resort to get the flaik GPS units.  They are available to children taking the Whistler Kids, Ride Tribe and private programs in ski school.

It makes it possible to locate children and guests on the mountain at any time, while also recording information such as lifts used, runs explored , average speed, how much vertical was achieved, number of trails explored and total distance accumulated.

Never out of contactNever out of contact"Parents this season can look forward to a little more peace-of-mind knowing that we'll be able to track their children, using flaik's GPS system, no matter where they are on the mountains. So far, the response from parents and children has been overwhelmingly positive," says Donna Kerr, General Manager, Whistler Kids.

The system uses cellular technology via a Global System for Mobile communications, GSM, network and transmits information that is then collected by a central server.

See here for safety devices in France that include children wearing a magnetic jacket so they don't fall off chairlifts.

Such accidents do happen as we have reported recently on PlanetSKI.
