PlanetSKI in the powder
Sunday January 3, 2010 - Email this article to a friend
The rain has stopped and it's all turned to snow. What a weekend it has been out in the Swiss Alps!
Just a few days ago it was a pretty depressing experience being in a ski resort - it was chucking it down with rain up to 2,000m and we reported on it with a video of all the rain falling.
It was the same across large parts of The Alps.
Now though all has changed.
In Verbier we have had around 25 cm of fresh powder and more is set to come. Best of all the holiday crowds have departed too and there are less people around. It is cold too so the snow is remaining.
In our base resort of Verbier the top run of Mont Fort finally opened at the weekend after it had enough snow to cover it. Last year it opened well before Christmas as we reported here with a video on the first day last season.
This year though 2 large avalanches swept away all the covering in December and there hasn't been enough snowfall since.
As it was on Mont Fort
A team from PlanetSKI was one of the first down and it was awesome.
Deep powder to begin with and then, when it had been skied out a bit it was lovely soft, grippy snow with the notorious moguls just beginning to develop.
The itinerary run of Gentianes has also recently opened and that too was in good condition at the weekend with most of the rocks covered.
Tortin has been open for a while and is pretty hard-packed.
With the cold weather ste to continue it bodes well for 2010 and we'll be bringing you an updated video of the condtions from Switzerland later this week.
In the meantime "here is one we made earlier" (as they used to say on Blue Peter) - a powder day in Verbier last season.
For those readers out at the moment do ski and snowboard safely though as the conditions off piste are dangerous with a number of avalanches as we have reported elsewhere on the site.
Stay safe and enjoy!
