Snow across Europe
Wednesday January 6, 2010 - Email this article to a friend
Once again Northern Europe is hit by freezing weather and heavy snow. The UK is particularly badly affected with problems across the rest of Europe too. Out in The Alps it's snowy with blue skies in many places.
As we awoke in the Swiss Alps this morning, Wednesday, we were greeted to sight we haven't seen for a while.
Blue sky and snow everywhere.
For those lucky ones out in the Alps it is a change from the holiday period. Over New Year it was raining, overcast and pretty miserable for much of the time.
Now though it is cold and snowy.
There are quite a few people still out skiing despite the main holiday period ending and they are enjying great snow.
See the video below from our content editor, James Cove, as he gives us a brief summary of conditions round the mountains.
However the cold weather has brought severe problems elsewhere in Europe with transport badly affected.
In the UK heavy snow led to travel disruption across much of the country. Airports were closed, roads were unpassable and rail services had delays and cancellations.
One of PlanetSKI's reporters was due to fly out of Geneva this afternoon with BA to Heathrow but the fight was cancelled.
"It was cancelled at the last minute but fortunately just before we were due to set off from our ski resort. It was too late to get a ticket for an extra afternoon's skiing and all out gear is packed, but we are going toboganning instead," he tells us.
"It was surprisingly simple to change the flight with BA and we are now booked on a flight tomorrow - if they can open up the runways."
Many other airports were affected.
Flights were delayed at Heathrow, Gatwick, Glasgow and Leeds/Bradford airports.
Bristol , Southampton and Luton were affected.
Passengers are advised to check with their airlines before setting off to the airport.
See this BBC video report of some of the conditions across Europe.
We are currently compiling our weekely overview of snow conditions round the world and so there will be further infomation in that when it goes live on Thursday.
