Verbier's top runs open
Friday January 8, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

It took a long time coming but this week the high runs opened up, including Mont Fort and Mont Gele. We finally had enough snow. Check out the PlanetSKI video and pictures too.

Last winter everything opened up in mid-December but this season we've had to wait a bit longer as there simply hasn't been enough snow to cover the high altitude itinerary runs.

When the piste patrol blasted Mont Fort for avalanches in December the whole lot came down which caught the avalanche boys by surprise.

They told us they weren't expecting it.

The other legendary run, Mont Gele that is accessed by a small single cable car, needs an awful lot of snow to cover it as it is very rocky.

This week we got it.

The one main run left to open is Vallon d'Arby, but there is still a high risk of avalanche in places.

The Swiss authorities are taking no chances after the recent deaths in the country, one of which was across the valley from Verbier in Bruson.

Below is a photo taken by our friends over at Performance Ski School on Mont Gele.
