Vail resorts see drop in visitors
Monday January 11, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

However with the economic situation and poor snow the fall is only small. Lift pass sales fell by 0.4% and visitors by 2.7%.

The figures compare the beginning of this season to the same period last winter. Vail resorts remain upbeat and say it could have been much worse.

"We are pleased, particularly given the current state of the economy and since snowfall came late to our Colorado resorts this year," says Rob Katz, the Chief Executive Officer for Vail resorts.

Colorado had late snowfall this season and Vail had only 19 of its lifts open in mid-Decemebr with just 28% of its terrain available for skiing because of poor snowfall.

Now 95% of its runs are open after the recent snow.

The Company's subsidiaries operate the mountain resort properties at the Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone mountain resorts in Colorado. The Heavenly Ski Resort in the Lake Tahoe area of California and Nevada and the Grand Teton Lodge Company in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Meanwhile in Utah The 2010 Economic Report to the Governor reveals tourist numbers fell by 10% last year and the number of skier visits to the state's 13 resorts dropped by 300,000.  However the state believes skier numbers should rise by 3% this winter.
