Brit telemarkers do well in World Cup - Jack Harvard Taylor
Wednesday January 13, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

The first British hosted FIS Telemark World Cup took place earlier this week in Rauris, Austria. We had a 15th place in the women's group and 4 in the men's top 30. Not bad really.

The event was a huge success, not only proving that it's possible to host a World Cup level event in a foreign country but also the British team had an excellent start to the season.

12 nations arrived in Rauris to participate in the first Telemark World Cup of the 2010 season.

There were 9 Brits from the team able to compete achieving very respectable results. Chris Steward finished 26th and three other team members finishing in the top 30.

In the women's GS, Sarah Hannibal crossed the line in 15th place, a very promising result given it was her first race on the World Cup circuit.

At the top of the field there were some surprising results and it seems that the French have been working hard in the closed season with Chris Lau taking first place in the Giant Slalom on day one beating Eirik Rykhus  from Norway by almost a full second.

On the other hand the Swiss racer, Bastien Dayer, was way off the pace trailing the leading pair by almost 4 seconds.

Andrew Clarke, British Team Captain, and the British organising committee paid tribute to the terrific help and assistance of the local Rauris community in putting together a brilliant few days of World Cup racing, particularly the Tourismusverband and the Hochalmbahnen who played vital roles during the proceedings.
