Sculpting in snow
Thursday January 21, 2010 - Email this article to a friend
Snow sculptures are popping up all over the place in the Austrian resort of Ischgl as an international competition takes place.
This rather large Viking is the surprise some people are met with as they ski round one of the pistes in the resort.
The sculpture is a male viking with, Vickie the Viking, a well-known cartoon character, nestling up close.
10 pairs of skilled snow sculptors from around the world are creating various cartoon characters in a 5-day challenge.
The Shapes in White contest is now in its 17th year - we reported on it last winter - and Vickie & and co will linger on the slopes until the Spring thaw.
The skiing in Ischgl carries on until May so they will be around for a while.
A similar event is also held in the Swiss resort of Grindelwald though they carve in ice.
And while we are on the subject one of the most read stories on PlanetSKI this month is about a giant snowman built in Austria last year.
We are not quite sure why it is in the top 5 with thousands of hits as we wrote about it last year, but it is! Must be google again.
