Helicopters may fly in Olympic snow
Wednesday January 27, 2010 - Email this article to a friend
The site at Cypress Mountain where some events are taking place is bare. It has been raining heavily and the venue resembles a mud bath rather than a ski slope.
The half pipe and other events are due to take place next month but warm temperatures and heavy rain have meant that the Olympic organisers are considering using helicopters to fly in the snow so that competition can take place.
They are already using lorries and snow cats to bring in snow from higher up the mountain. Wood and straw have been put down to help preserve what snow may fall.
There were a few flurries a couple of days ago but the temperature has now risen and no significant amounts of fresh snow are predicted.
People though are keeping their fingers crossed.
It is all a long way from conditions before Christmas when the area had record amounts of snow. However with its maritime climate rain was always a distinct possibility for some Olympic venues.
Any PlanetSKI reader who has been to Whistler and the surrounding area will know about the rain!
