Heavy snow in eastern US
Monday February 8, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

And we mean heavy. Washington, Virginia and Baltimore have had some of their heaviest snowfalls ever. Over a million people have been without power and many areas have declared a state of emergency. Large amounts of snow are once again falling in places not used to it.

Over the weekend Washington DC had well over half a metre.  It brought the city to a complete standstill with airports shut, the transport system in chaos and pretty much everyone affected by it.

There were scores of traffic accidents but so far only two fatalities.

It has though bought pleasure to many with people skiing and tobogganing in the parks and many taking time off work and school.

Some had a huge snowball fight at DuPont Circle that was organised via Facebook and Twitter.  Thousands of people took part and pictures of the event have been shown round the world.

However the snowfall was erratic.  In southern areas of Jersey it was chaos while in the north not a flake fell.

The Hidden Valley Club ski resort in Sussex County didn't see a single snowflake.

For more information and videos see this story on the BBC.

Last December the same part of the eastern US had 40cm of snow and of course in the UK it has been a record-breaking winter for snow as we reported earlier.

This winter has seen large amounts of snow falling in places not quite used to it.

In Washington instead of snipers on the top of the White House there have been men with snow shovels.

People in the city have also been getting around on skis and snowshoes.

A German woman was out for a walk in her snowshoes.

"It's like being in the Alps," the woman, a former ski instructor, told local media.

"I have Alpine skis but the city is too flat. Yesterday I wanted to buy some cross-country skis but there was none left in the shops."

The weather is now improving but further snow is predicted in places by the middle of the week.

Winter round the world is certainly not over yet.

Here's a snapshot of the Dupont Circle snowball fight.
