Snow closes Luton airport
Monday February 22, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

A plane from Geneva is diverted to Gatwick and other flights are cancelled as snow falls in Bedfordshire.

With snow on the runway the authorities took the decision to close the airport on Monday morning causing severe travel problems for many.

It is hoped flights will resume by early afternoon.

Luton is used by many skiers and snowboarders to get to and from The Alps.  It has been a strange old winter with snow and cold weather in the UK delaying many trips to the Alps as we have already reported.

Here is a statement for the airport's web site on the current situation:

Due to heavy snowfall, the runway at London Luton Airport is closed for snow clearing until approximately 13.00.  Arriving and departing flights are subject to delay and or cancellation. Passengers and those meeting people at the airport are advised to contact the airline directly.  More information on flight status will be posted on this website as soon as it is available.

Check back here for further information.

NEWS UPDATE 14.30: The runway has re-opened though there are delays and a back log of flights to clear.
