The Russian capital gets 63cm, the largest single fall since 1966. Many Muscovites stayed at home and a massive clear up operation is under way.
People in Mosocw are used to cold temperatures are large snowfalls but this was the biggest many had ever seen.
The city authorities told people to remain indoors and not travel unless their journeys were essential, and by and large the warnings were heeded.
Roads were empty but rail services were barley affected as the workers made extra efforts to keep the tracks clear and running.
There are no reports of any serious traffic accidents.
In all 12,00 snow-clearing machines have been used with over 5,000 workers out clearing the streets.
The weather is set to be clear for the next few days with cold temperatures.
