Half a metre of fresh snow in Scotland
Thursday February 25, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

The season gets better and better, for skiers and snowboarders that is, but for everyone else it has been a bitter winter. At the moment it's chucking it down. There's a report of an avalanche in Glencoe with 2 people dead.

Roads are treacherous, schools are closed, it's tricky getting to work and heating bills are rising.

Some power lines are down and 3,000 homes are without electrcity.

The transport system has been badly affected with many roads impassable or treacherous.  See this latest update on conditions on the roads from the BBC.

But for us skiers and snowboarders it has been a winter that will be remembered for years to come. The best in 30 years.

Now heavy snow is falling and temperatures are dropping. However all 5 Scottish ski resorts are closed due to the heavy snow and strong winds.

We will bring you an updated report from our reporter in Scotland later.

Frozen overFrozen overRivers that normally flow in winter are frozen.

"We had over 50 ski and snowboard instructors working over half term this year and it was the best conditions I can remember at the time of year," says Mike Shepherd who runs the local ski school at Cairngorm. "We had superb snow."

It was, quiet simply, a throwback to the good old days of Scottish skiing.

One British family, the Ross-Russells,  tend to ski in The Alps but chose Scotland instead this month as the snow has been so good and the prices better value.

"We had a fantastic time skiing in Glenshee and it was better than anything the Alps had to offer," says Rory Ross-Russell who was there with his wife and 3 children.

See the family photo below that he has sent to us at PlanetSKI.

The other side of the coin though is a number of fataliites.  2 climbers died in an avalanche in Glencoe.

It's believed they set off a small slab avalanche that then swept them over a cliff to their deaths.

One man in the group survived.  The Glencoe Mountain resuce service said the two men fell 500m.

There have already been a number of avalanches in Scotland this winter and some fatal incidents.

A team from PanetSKI will be in Scotland soon and will bring you a look at the season so far.
