Women's GS takes place
Friday February 26, 2010 - Email this article to a friend
It was called off yesterday due to bad weather in controversial circumstances. Some said it should never have started and demanded a re-run after many crashed and racing was stopped with skiers on the course.
The favourite Lindesy Vonn crashed. Her team mate, Julia Mancuso, was stopped in the middle of her run, taken back up on a skidoo and made to race again.
Her concentration had gone and she skied it poorly.
17 racers, out of a field of over 80, failed to complete the first run. Overall 26 crahsed out.
Some, particularly the Americans, demanded the whole competition should be re-run. It wasn't though and just the second run went ahead on Thursday.
Gold was taken by the German, Viktoria Rebensburg. The Slovenian, Tina Maze, took silver the Austria's, Elisabeth Goergl, the bronze.
Britain's Chemmy Alcott came 25th on the first run and finished 27th overall today.
Alcott in the fog
She supported the decision of officials yesterday but said she was disappointed with her performance overall.
Alcott started the day 2.41 seconds off the lead in 25th following her opening run yesterday.
She attacked the course again today but couldn't improve on her overnight position.
Alcott clocked a time of 1:12.41 on run two. That put her 2.83 seconds behind the combined time of Germany's Viktoria Rebensburg,
"I felt like I really knocked the door down. I didn't really make a mistake, I just skied too hard," she said. "I'm disappointed because it just didn't happen today. It was a bit of a bad day at the office. Everybody has them, but you just don't want it at the Olympics," she added.
Alcott supported the decision to postpone the race due to fog.
"It was a good a decision," she said. "It was a safety decision. The conditions were really difficult and they were much better today. We were all in the same boat."
The women's competitions ends on Friday with the slalom.
It should be quite a race after the controversy surrounding the GS with many wanting to make a final impression on The 2010 Winter Olympics.

Elsewhere, The Team GB men’s four-man bobsleigh team of John Jackson, Henry Nwume, Dan Money and Allyn Condon compete at the Whistler Sliding Centre on Friday with the opening two runs of the four run competition.
The final two runs follow on Saturday.
At the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, Team GB short track speed skater Jon Eley will be aiming for a medal in the men’s 500m.
He races in the second quarter-final and hopes to progress to the semi-finals and final, which follow shortly after.
Eley will then join his teammates to contest the men’s 5000m relay B final where Team GB will race against Germany.
So, how do you thing Britain has done overall? We have just one medal, albeit a gold, and there is some talk that our world champion curlers and bob sleighers did not live up to expectations. Others say our team did very well under difficult circumstances and stiff competition. One thing is for sure; it's been a great event.
What do you think?
