Cuche and Vonn victorious
Monday March 8, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

They both win their weekend races and the titles. It was the first World Cup races since the Winter Olympics and proved to be as exciting.

For Didier Cuche it was sweet revenge for missing out on the podium in the discipline at the Olympics. He had been one of the favourites but it was won by his Swiss team mate,  Didier Defago.

Cuche came 6th in Vancouver.

However, the 35-year old veteran racer made no mistake at Kvitfjell, Norway and beat the Norwegian, Svindal, by almost half a second.

Bode Miller missed the event.

Cuche clinched the title with one race remaining at Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany next weekend.

Cuche's only rival for the title was his Swiss team mate, Carlo Janka, who finished 6th.

The Super G saw the Canadian, Erik Guay, finishing 1st, beating Hannes Reichelt (Aut) 2nd, leaving 3rd place to both Tobias Gruenfelder (Sui) and Aksel Lund Svinda.

The two Didiers didn't do terribly well after their first runs - Cuche was disqualified and Defago didn't finish.

As expected the US superstar, Lindsey Vonn, won the women's title in Crans Montana.

She too had a somewhat disappointing Olympics judged by her high standards.

Although she took gold in the Downhill there had been talk of her getting a clean sweep of medals and she was certainly hoping for more than 1 gold at The Vancouver Games.

She adds the World Cup Downhill title to the Super-G title she has already won this season.

She has now won 6 out of the 7 Women's Downhill races this season.

This race though was a close run affair. She beat Italy's Johanna Schnarf by just one hundredth of a second in poor weather.

Gale force winds had already forced the organisers to abandon the women's Alpine Super-combined World Cup, and Vonn claimed the super-combined World Cup title.

Moreover, Vonn just missed winning the Super G.

She was only marginally beaten by Dominique Gisin of Switzerland in the Super G but still, she claimed 2nd place

Here's Lindsey being interviewed after her victory courtesy of FIS.

Switzerland's, Dominique Gisin, comments on her Super G win in Crans Montana.

GB's Chemmy Alcott was 32nd in the Women's Downhill event but she managed to pull herself up to 23rd place in Super G.

In the meantime here's a little more detail to the winning places for both women's and men's events in Switzerland and Norway respectively.
