Bye, bye Bode
Tuesday March 9, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

We may have seen the US racer take part in his last ever properly competitive race. Sad, but true. Let's hope we're wrong.

He didn't race in Norway last weekend and he has now announced he will not take part in the final World Cup race of the season in Germany this weekend.

Hardly surprising as he is across the Atlantic in the US and quite frankly after his successful Olympics with a gold, silver and bronze medal, why should he bother?

It's a long way to come.

He has achieved his season's goals.

It is though nevertheless a shame and he is citing an ankle injury as the reason.

bode_2He did it ages ago playing volleyball in December and it didn't seem to stop him taking part in The Olympics but, of course, it could have been aggravated by the training and skiing.

That is what he says anyway in his blog.

"The injury has become a chronic injury because I skied on it for so long with it injured and it never had a chance to heal."

"My goal at the beginning of the season was to get ready for the Olympics and to win races in February. I just sort of focused on that and I did that. ... I feel like I accomplished everything I wanted to this season."

According to his blog he wants to spend time with his children and is considering his options for next season.

Here at PlanetSKI we 'd love to see him race again at the highest level but we certainly wouldn't put money on it.

We will though remember him for what he was.

One of the most exciting skiers to have ever graced the stage.

In our opinion he is up there with the very, very best of them.

Think Killy, Sailer, Klammer and Maier.

Bye, bye Bode.

Do check back later as we will be bringing you a series of videos of some of his most memorable races.
