Latest volcano video

Here's more video of the volcano in Iceland and news of some of the air travel restrictions being lifted. It looks like more aircaft will be allowed to fly shortly though the latest news is that more volcanic ash is heading our way.

Scottish airports are now open with services operating above a line between Teesside and Blackpool.

Internal flights left Glasgow and Edinburgh this morning (Tuesday).

Some other airports in England will open later today though Manchester airport will not open until this evening and it now looks unlikely that Heathrow and Gatwick will open today.

Air space is clear over Northern Ireland but is expected to shut again on Tuesday afternoon.

"Assuming there are no further significant ash emissions we are now looking at an improving situation," said the National Air Traffic Services. It is not as swift as was hoped for yesterday.

Inverness opensInverness opensQuantas airline has carried out some short test-flighst to assess the viability of putting some of their planes in the air and has decided not to risk flights into European airspace until it is officially opened. 

Austrian authorities have reopened the country's airspace after volcanic ash forced its closure. Flights have left Zurich airport in Switzerland too.  A total of 850 flights have so far been cancelled at Zurich and Geneva airports.

Millions of passengers worldwide have been stuck because of the cancellations. 

There is some small improvement in other parts of Europe, some domestic flights in Sweden and Finland have been allowed to take off.

Elsewhere on PlanetSKI we have tales of those who have made it to and from The Alps.

The Eyjafjallajökull eruption is still pushing steam and volcanic debris high into the atmosphere.

There seems to be even more ash spewing from the volcano, and it shows little sign of abating.

The cloud of ash rising from a volcano in Iceland has shut down most European airports for a fifth day.

Britain has sent Royal Navy warships to rescue those stranded across the Channel.

HMS Albion has arrived in Spain though it is mainly to bring back military personnel.

There is frustration and anger on the quayside from civiliains who have been told they can not board.

300 have been allowed on, but many more have been told they are not allowed to. There are 500 soldiers on the vessell.

 "The decision to lift airspace restrictions will be taken by others, and as things stand all flights remain suspended. When airports do open for business, we will continue to strongly advise passengers that they must check the status of their flight with airlines before travelling to airports," says a statement from the British Airports Authority.

"We appreciate the continued patience of our passengers at this difficult time."
