Cairngorm could open into June
Thursday May 6, 2010 - Email this article to a friend
At the moment there is enough snow and with the current cold temperatures it is a distinct possibilty. There has been skiing in the Scottish resort in June before and the weather of course may change, but it looks pretty good.
Cairngorm has now closed for skiing and snowboarding on weekdays, but it will re-open each weekend as long as there is demand.
The snow is still there. It is just a question of whether enough people will turn out to make it economically viable.
The snow is hard packed and wind-blown at the moment and, of course, not as good as it was earlier in the season.
However people who ski and snowboard in Scotland are made of stern stuff and used to harsh conditions.
They are also used to skiing and snowboading on thin strips of snow just for the pleasure of making a few turns.
Last weekend though, over the bank holiday, there was a little bit of fresh snow and hundreds turned out to enjoy it as we reported here.
Summer is still a long way offThe weather is wild and windy at the moment.
With over a meter of snow on the mid-mountain runs and over 2m on the higher runs it might well stay open until June.
Below is a You Tube video showing the wind bufffeting the T-bars of the Coire Cas tow and the snow fences still holding the snow in place depsite gusts of up to 80 mph from earlier in the season.
The resort has just posted it on You Tube.
Not the greatest skiing conditions though!
