Flights disrupted by ash cloud
Monday May 10, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

Transatlantic flights are still being re-routed north and south of the cloud over the Atlantic. Most airports across Europe have re-opened. Airports serving The Alps and The Pyrenees were closed over the weekend.

More than 600 planes make the Atlantic crossing every day and now they are being forced to go round the cloud of volcanic ash.

The cloud itself is now 2,000 km long and is shifting in the wind.

Spanish airports closed, including Barcelona, and some airports in the south of France canclled flights as the ash cloud lingered over The Pyrenees.

The Alps were affected over the weekend with airports in France, Austria, Switzerland and southern Germany cancelling flights.

The Met Office said ash could return to large parts of UK airspace and that the situation is being monitored closely.

All have now re-opened.

See this video from the BBC about where the ash cloud is and how it is having an impact on air travel once again.

The problems are nothing like last month when airspace was closed for 6 days.

10m passengers were affected.

It does though show that the impact of the volcanic eruption in Iceland is far from over.

Some experts predict things could get even worse.

See this story on PlanetSKI from earlier in the week with details of the latest disruption over UK airspace and links to videos of the volcano and its lava flow.

Scientists say the eruptions of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano are expected to intensify.
