BA strike goes ahead
Monday May 24, 2010 - Email this article to a friend
Last-ditch negotiations failed to stop this week's industrial action going ahead and cabin crew are have started a 5 days strike. But what are the main sticking points?
The strike has now started and, like many arguments, the original reason for the disagreement gets somewhat lost as the two sides takes sides, get entrenched and ratchet up the row with rhetoric.
So, it appears, with this industrial dispute.
What would each side actually have to give to meet each other?
Well not much it seems.
After lengthy reading and hearing from all sides in the dispute via TV, radio and the internet it appears the sticking point is the loss of travel perks of the staff that previously went on strike.
The temperature has been risen by the union's move to use Twitter to detail some of the details of the negotiations on Saturday.
The union leader, Derek Simpson, sent out several tweets including "Arguments over the 8 sacked workers," and "Fear of more sackings to come".
BA reacted angrily accusing the union of not taking negotiations seriously.
Meanwhile the first in a series of 5 days strikes in underway, BA has lost £43m so far in the dispute and here at PlanetSKI we have just booked a flight with another airline for next month as the future is uncertain.
We can't be the only ones to have done such a thing.
Maybe it is all just last minute positioning before a deal is pulled from the hat.
On the other hand there may be much bigger things at stake as BA could be trying the break the union and the union could be defending its position.
Whatever happens some things will take a while to get back. Goodwill and trust.
BA says it will be able to run 60% of long-haul flights and 50% of short-haul services from Heathrow.
It says that its flights from Gatwick will be unaffected.
The airline is leasing a number of planes with pilots and crew from other carriers.
If you are looking to book a flight then take a look at Cheap Flights to Geneva which offers cheap flights to anywhere in the world. We have set it up to take you through to flights to Geneva but you just change the settings to see flights to and from any airport, not just Geneva. It has some of the best deals around with all the major airlines.
Trust will take a while to return
