USA wins 2015 World Championships
Thursday June 3, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

Beaver Creek/Vail has been chosen to host the 2015 World Championships. The International Ski Federation made the anouncement in Turkey at its bi-annual meeting and the result has just been announced.

We have just received this short statement here at PlanetSKI.

"Beaver Creek/Vail (USA) was elected as the host of the 2015 Alpine World Ski Championships. With 8 votes, Beaver Creek/Vail achieved an absolute majority in the first ballot against Cortina d'Ampezzo (ITA, 4 votes) and St. Moritz (SUI, 3 votes)."

We will bring you further details and reaction when we get it.

In the meantime below is the preview story that we put up earlier in the week.

It has been quite a battle between the resorts of Cortina d' Ampezzo in Italy, the Swiss resort of St. Moritz and Beaver/Creek Vail in Colorado USA.

Cortina hosted the Olympics back in 1956 while St Moritz hosted the Word Championships in 2003. and Vail in 1999.

The Americans have been lobbying hard and are in Antalya, Turkey, along with bakcking from the US Ski and Snowboard Association.

Vail has also been deploying its not-so-secret weapon a certain ski racer who lives in the resort, Lindesy Vonn.

"Beaver Creek/Vail would be an incredible host for the 2015 Worlds," said bid ambassador and  Lindsey Vonn to local media. She is about the most famous ski racer on the planet and is an Olympic gold medalist and double World Champion.

"I was such a young girl in 1999, but I remember the energy and excitement and know that kids from all over the world would be fired up to see their Olympic heroes compete in America."

An absolute majority from the 16 members of the FIS Council is required to win The Championships.

The last World Championship in 2009 were held in Val d'Isere, France, the 2011 Championships will take place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany and the 2013 event has been awarded to Schladming in Austria.

Some feel it is time for North America to host them again.

Here on PlanetSKI we'll let you know tomorrow who was won.
