Slopestyle gets the go ahead
Wednesday June 9, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

It is set to have its own World Championships and could be in the Sochi Olympic Games in 2014. Ski half pipe looks set to make it to the next Winter Olympics too.

The decisions were made at the FIS congress at Antalya in Turkey.

There was unanimous support for snowboarding slopestyle and team snowboardcross to be included in the World Championships.

The move was proposed by the USA, Canada and New Zealand, as we reported on PlanetSKI last week.

See here for exactly what slopestyle is and the background to the move.

The British will have a realistic gold medal contender in the shape of Jenny Jones.

Once a sport has had 2 of its own World Championship competitions it can then be considered for Olympic approval.

Ski half pipe is already in the World Championships and a US and French proposal to submit ski half pipe to the International Olympic Committee for consideration was approved unanimously.

Many see these new snowsports as the future of competition as young people flock to the terrain parks.

The sports also have a life-style image that, of course, the advertisers and sponsors like.
