French glacier resort fires up for summer
Thursday June 17, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

Les 2 Alpes is the first of France's three summer ski areas to open. So, what are conditions like at the moment?

The lifts open at 7.15am each day with skiing and snowboarding going on until the 28th August.

The first day for summer snowsports was on Wednesday 16th June.

The resort's summer ski area, one of Europe's largest, covers 200 hectares and has 8 runs and a large snow park.

In the park are two half pipes and a superpipe at an altitude of  between 2,900m and 3,600m.

At the moment there is a depth of 2.4m at the top.

The other two glacier summer ski areas are at Tignes and Val d'Isere.

Tignes is by far the bigger of the 2 and a better bet for summer snowsports.

A few years ago Alpe d'Huez, La Plagne and Val Thorens also offered summer snow sports, but not any more.

A combination of shrinking glaciers and a lack of demand have led to the closures.

Today though the first French resort, Les 2 Alpes, opens for summer business.

Here at PlanetSKI we will bring you a report from the resort later in the summer.
