Lift collapse in New Zealand
Friday June 18, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

A pylon is severely damaged at Turoa as a build up of ice falls off. No-one was injured and urgent repairs are now being carried out.

The High Noon Express was being routinely examined when staff noticed that tower 9 was damaged.

"Preliminary assessment is the tower has sustained significant shock load from natural release of cable ice and this is not due to any design or structural defect in the lift," says a statement on the resort's web site.

Repairs are now being carried out and the lift will be out of action for up to a month.

The lift's manufacturer, Doppelmayr, is getting all the necessary parts to the resort as quickly as possible.

Break in the weatherBreak in the weatherThe weather has lifted and a helicopter is being used to take away the components from the damaged pylon.

The replacement segments are currently being built by an engineering firm near Wellington.

They should be delivered in 2 to 3 weeks.

The lift is a 6-person detachable chairlift and gives access to some of the areas advanced slopes.

Once the work is finished the lift will have to undergo the necessary safety checks and inspections before it can be open to the public.
