Painting a mountain white
Saturday June 19, 2010 - Email this article to a friend
It is being done in Peru to highlight the effects of climate change and hopefully allow glaciers to form again. The glaciers of the Andes have reduced sharply in recent years.
The idea is that if the mountains are painted white then the sun's heat is reflected back into space and will not warm up the earth.
The idea has apparently got a financial grant from the UN so the organisation believes it may have some merit.
The man behind he project, a non-scientist, hopes the earth will cool down and the glaciers may grow again here they once were.
It may sound like an April Fool but is reported at length here on the BBC.
