Expensive in Oz
Monday June 28, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

The lift passes are amongst the most expensive of anywhere in the world. A recent survey says they can cost around twice as much as in Europe.

A day pass costs around $100 in several resorts in Australia, while an equivalent pass in Chamonix would be $56 and in the Italian resort of Cortina it would set you back $60.

That's according to a survey reported on this Australian news web site.

It appears to be slightly more expensive in Switzerland but not by much.

The high price is partly due to the exchange rate but also because there is no competition.

Countries and resorts in the Alps are all in competition with each other so keep a careful eye on prices.

Cheaper in EuropeCheaper in EuropeLast winter many of the French resorts pegged their lift ticket prices and did deals with British tour operators to offer free passes in an attempt to woo new business and keep existing clients.

It may though have had limited success as some of the popular resorts in France have rumoured falls of up to 20% in British visitors last winter.

Official figures have not been revealed but when we get them next month here at PlanetSKI we expect to see some startling drops in some of the major French resorts.

Meanwhile if you are thinking of heading down under to ski and snowboard then lift ticket prices are considerably cheaper in New Zealand.
