Grass skiing underway
Monday July 5, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

The World Cup got underway last weekend in Cenkovice in The Czech republic. But what exactly is grass skiing and why do people do it?

Grass skiing is exactly what it says. Skiing on grass.

It began in the mid-1960's as a way for alpine skiers to train and stay in shape during the out of season period.

It developed but has never really taken off.

Some of the skis have small wheels on the base, but most are tracked like normal skis, but they have to have less friction to be able to slide over the grass.

It is a "specialist" sport but there is a full World Cup programme with FIS races in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Last summer on PlanetSKI we ran a feature about it with information about roller skiing too which is favoured by many of the Nordic skiers as a good means of training out of season.

See the feature here.

One of the highlights of the season will be the FIS Grass Skiing Junior World Championships in Dizin in Iran from 3rd-6th August 2010.

The senior World Cup races there will coincide with the juniors' title events from 5th-6th August.

In August, the World Cup tour will be back in Central Europe, with competitions scheduled in the Austrian town of Faistenau. The World Cup Finals will again be staged Italy, this time in Sestriere, Italy, in mid-September.

For the children, a three-weekend race series is on offer.

Following the opening in Schnorrenbach(Germany) last  weekend there is racing in  Piestany (Slovakia) and Ceske Petrovice (Czech Republic) that will host the finals in August 2010.

For further details of the rules, the competitions and information about the athletes see the FIS web site.
