Salomon boot recalled in US
Friday July 2, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

One of its new touring boots has been withdrawn after worries about its design. Already one person has been badly injured and serious questions have been raised about safety.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced that Salomon is recalling the Quest Pro boot after a person was seriously inured in a fall.

The formal announcement has been made this week, June 30th, although the company has already withdrawn the boot from sale.

We reported on the initial incident back in April after a blogger detailed his injuries and experiences with the boot.

His boot apparently released unexpectantly while he was descending a steep back-country slope and he suffered serious leg injuries as a result of the fall.

There are more details about the whole issue on the US web site, Wild Snow.

The problem lies with the toe portion of the boot pad that may unexpectedly release from certain types of touring ski bindings.

It is most certainly not something a skier wants to happen on a steep decent off piste.

"The toe portion of the boot may release unexpectedly from the touring-style ski binding, under certain circumstances, posing a falling risk to the skier," says a statement on the Salomon web site.

Around 83 pairs of boots and 175 pairs of touring pads have been sold.

"Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product," says a statement from the CPSA.

The boot has only been sold at 8 selected Salomon USA ski boot dealers in Colorado, Utah, Vermont and Washington between February 2010 and April 2010.

The boots cost about $750 and the sole pads $50.

People should return the product for a full refund.

The boot itself was made in Romania.

In the UK Salomon is currently recalling the toe component of some of its ski bindings.
