Indoor snow melts in Belgium
Saturday July 17, 2010 - Email this article to a friend
It was so hot outside the snow inside started to melt in the recent European heatwave at the Snowvalley at Peer in Belgium. The insulation couldn't cope.
Snowvalley normally has temperatures of -3c on its indoor slopes, but as temperatures outside went above +30c, the centre saw indoor temperatures move above freezing to +2c inside.
The cooling machines were turned up to maximum and that brought the interior temperature down to freezing, but also put up operating costs to pay for the higher energy requirements.
The centre is yet to confirm whether a corresponding increase in business as users head to the indoor snow slopes for relief from the high temperatures outdoors, has offset the increased operating costs.
Last winter the centre used its lifts inside to get people up so they could then ski and snowboard outside as the area had so much snow.
