New après ski bar in Africa
Saturday July 17, 2010 - Email this article to a friend
Lesotho's only ski area, Afriski, is building The Gondola Café which will, apparently, be Africa's highest après ski bar.
There can't be that much competition for the accolade but the ski centre in the land-locked, but mountainous Southern African kingdom, can now accommodate 250 people overnight.
The aim is to bring some of the European apres ski traditions to the roof of Africa, to widen the centre's appeal further than just the slopes.
Afriski attracts day skiers from surrounding towns, such as Clarens, about 110km away.
It receives around 12,000 skiers a season, visiting from all over the region, but the majority from Johannesburg.
Snow cannons seem to workA PlanetSKI reader, Steph Wiehe, was there last year and told us about the place.
It has a 1km long ski run that has full snowmaking cover if natural snow fails to arrive.
Events coming this southern hemisphere winter include the Kings Cup, a Lesotho event, plus the South African National Ski and Snowboarding championships that will be held later in July/August.
For the latest details on the conditions we cover the ski area in the PlanetSKI snow report.
