Farmers may block Munich's Olympic bid
Saturday July 31, 2010 - Email this article to a friend
The German city is bidding to host the 2018 Games but farmers say they are not prepared to give up their land.
It is not clear whether it is a negotiating ploy or a real stand, but the farmers say they will reject a bid for the authorities to use their land near Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
The ski resort will host some of the skiing competitions but without the farmers giving up their land then the events would not, apparently, be able to take place.
Munich is aiming to be the first city to hold both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games.
It held the Summer Games in 1972.
Munich is up against Annecy in France and Pyeongchang in South Korea.
Some commentators feel the South Korean city is the favourite as it narrowly lost out to Vancouver last time around.
In 2014 The Winter Games will be held in Sochi, Russia, so it is perhaps felt The Games in 2018 should be held in a different part of the world.
We have reported already on the battle for the 2018 Winter Games here on PlanetSKI.
