Giant iceberg breaks away
Sunday August 8, 2010 - Email this article to a friend
It measures 100 square miles and is one of the largest ever recorded. Some say it points to the continuing threat of climate change.
It broke off a glacier in Greenland, 620 miles from The North Pole.
It may simply get re-absorbed back into the ice pack that will grow as winter approaches and the temperature cools down.
Or it may float further south and could even end up in shipping lanes.
The cracks in the ice were being monitored by scientists in the US and it has not come as a surprise.
For more information see this story on the BBC.
A similar occurance happened in Antarctica when a giant iceberg broke away and got into shipping lanes. It became a big story as some said it would even threaten the Australian coastline.
We reported on it here on PlanetSKI.
Below is an ITN report on the recent giant Iceberg breaking off from Greenland's glacier - posted on You Tube on 8th August.
