Snowmen in South Africa - Lynsey Devon, South Africa

Now here at PlanetSKI we like to bring you news of snow round the world. So, here is another one of our reader's tales. From The World Cup.
Now I expected to see some football, perhaps visit a game reserve but I hadn't been planning to build any snowmen on my recent visit to South Africa.
I envisaged a game reserve would be hot and humid with the sun baking down, but I felt like I had entered Narnia with snow scattered across the hills.
Perhaps I could make a snowboard out of a table and head up.
There were though some rather fast and hungry animals around so on second thoughts perhaps it was not such a good idea. The thought of being fodder for these animals slightly put me off.
There were a few around.
White lions, elephants, leopards, not to mention the smaller fry of springboks, oryx and elande.
There's powder in them hills
So instead we built some snowmen.
Snowmen, South African style
As well as seeing the animals I was there to help in a community project along with some football supporters who were travelling with Thomson Sport, 15 Ground Force volunteers from sister companies i-to-i and Robertson & Caine, a catamaran builders in Cape Town.
i-to-i offer a number of community-based projects in and around Cape Town including 'Work with children in a township', in the Masiphumelele township.
On this project volunteers work with young children in a crèche, entertaining them, improving their English skills, helping with preparing meals and assisting the teachers in singing, reading stories and supervising on the miniature playground.
Oh, and building snowmen when conditions allow.
Prices start at £899 per person for two weeks (possible to extend to 6 weeks) including shared dormitory room accommodation in the volunteer house, airport arrival pickup and an in-country orientation and 24hr emergency cover support.
For each booking made i-to-i buy 3 mattresses for the crèche. Flights and meals are not included.
