Last minute reprive for ski resorts
Tuesday August 17, 2010 - Email this article to a friend

Two Canadian ski areas up for sale have now been rescued by a local government bail out. They were threatened with closure if a buyer didn't come forward, but a rescue deal appears to have been agreed.

The Centennial Park Ski and Snowboard Centre in Etobicoke and Earl Bales Ski and Snowboard Centre in North York have been on the market for a while.

No-one though has come forward to buy them and it was feared they may be mothballed and closed for this coming winter.

We have already reported on the situation on PlanetSKI, Fancy owning a ski resort?

Local skiers and snowboarders were obviously disappointed at the prospect of their ski hills being shut.

Now though a $600, 000 rescue package has been agreed and it involved elected representative ignoring the advice of council officials.

Maybe the politicians are skiers or snowboarders?

They certainly seem to like them.

"Should we only allow skiing and snowboarding for rich kids? Absolutely not," one of the councillors is reported as saying in local media.

The chief finance officer though had warned against supporting the resorts and urged the councillors to reduce recreational spending.

The resorts are no doubt still available at the right price but, for the moment, next winter is being subsidised by the local tax payer.
