Top juniors go head to head

300 will be competing in the FIS Snowboard & Freestyle Junior World Championships In New Zealand this weekend. It's the first time a FIS World Championship has taken place in the Southern Hemisphere.

It's also the first time freeskiing and snowboarding have combined.

The event takes place at the resort of Wanaka with the competitors aged between 13 and 20.

Many of the top young riders in the world are there including 4 from Britain.

Should be quite an eventShould be quite an eventAlex Nordquist, James Barrow and Thomas Bankes will take part in the snowboardcross. Lewis Courtier-Jones who will compete in both snowboard slopestyle and half pipe.

Heading the New Zealand team is the current world number one freeskier, Jossi Wells, who comes from Wanaka.

There are many other up and coming locals from the New Zealand resorts who will hope to make a name for themselves.

There are world top 20 riders from other countries making the long journey down south.

Several are in the country doing summer training ahead of next season in the north.

There are 9 disciplines taking place; snowboard slopestyle, snowboard cross, snowboard halfpipe, snowboard parallel slalom and giant slalom, snowboard big air, freeski slopestyle, ski cross and freeski halfpipe.

These events are the up and coming sports in the snowsport world and some of them made a big impression at the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Others look set to be included in future Olympic Games.
